The block walls are only a small part of the foundations for the whole house. While the number of blocks laid hasn’t been counted, on level ground this would be considered a relatively small job. The blocklayers are pleased (and relieved) to be done with this steep site, at least for now, having done an excellent job under difficult conditions. Those blocks that will be seen from the footpath have been honed off-site specially to give their visible face a more interesting appearance.

Finishing off the block walls. The stormwater and sewerage pipes are laid on top of ‘blue metal’, one of those odd terms that actually just means ‘crushed rock’. Soon Jarrod the excavator operator will cover the pipes with soil.

Very close to finishing the walls now. The excavator has been busy pushing soiling around the whole site and has created a level area or two for the first time ever on the land. The less soil that needs to be removed from the site the better, both for environmental and cost reasons.

Proof, in the light of day, that the trench across the site for stormwater and sewerage has plenty of fall

The blocklayers are gone. The corner shows the contrast between the honed blocks facing the street and the rest of the walls, which will never be seen once the house is finished.

The walls on the left are the visible ones. Soon all the walls will be filled with concrete to make them even more stable and to damp-proof them.
